Unpaid Carers

Unpaid carers within South Asian communities play a vital yet often overlooked role in providing essential care and support to their family members, typically without financial compensation. In South Asian cultures, caregiving is deeply rooted in familial and communal values, with individuals assuming responsibility for the well-being of their loved ones as a fundamental duty. The intricate social fabric of South Asian communities places a high emphasis on respect for elders, intergenerational bonds and maintaining family harmony, leading to an increased prevalence of caregiving within these familial structures. Balancing cultural norms with the practical challenges of caregiving, such as financial constraints, language barriers, and limited access to support services, creates a complex landscape for unpaid carers within South Asian communities.

One Vision Initiative

The Care for Carers Programme by One Vision was funded and supported by Hertfordshire County Council. It has demonstrated a comprehensive and inclusive approach in engaging a diverse group of unpaid carers from Hertfordshire. By leveraging existing community ties and partnerships, such as community connectors and faith groups, the programme has successfully created a supportive environment that crteates a sense of community and belonging among participants.

Overall, the Care for Carers Programme exemplifies a proactive and community-focused initiative that prioritises the well-being and support of unpaid carers in Hertfordshire, showcasing the impact of strategic partnerships and a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of the community.

Our Approach

The incorporation of various activities like physical fitness, nutrition, art therapy and mental well-being sessions within the community engagement sessions has not only facilitated information sharing but also promoted holistic well-being and empowerment among the unpaid carers. This holistic approach recognises the multifaceted needs of carers beyond just practical support.

Furthermore, the collaborative efforts of the programme extended to resource sharing, signposting and referrals to other charitable organisations and statutory bodies. This network of support plays a crucial role in addressing the diverse needs of unpaid carers effectively, ensuring they receive the necessary assistance and guidance tailored to their specific circumstances.
